Plans Begin… Where To?

Somehow we were both on the same page right from the beginning. We wanted to go on a road-trip.

Some couples would be horrified at the idea of being contained in a tiny space with their mate for such a long time, but the thought never occurred to us. Maybe it’s because as soon as we hit the road, a few times each year to visit family in Quebec and Ontario, our bodies relax, minds de-stress, and a lightness of being transcends; a playful camaraderie in which we find ourselves chatting easily, sharing stories and thoughts and dreams, often rolling along in quietude, sometimes being entertained by CBC radio documentaries.

The “HOW” part would unfold as time passed. For now, we were just far too excited on dreaming about the “WHERE” and “IN WHAT” parts of our plans…

We knew we wanted to drive as far as the continent would allow and follow the coastline, but also take our time visiting family and friends. Naturally, we decided the loop in the road would turn us around once we travelled to Panama. And the route there would take us across Canada to the west coast, south through USA, Mexico, and all through Central America. We would visit 9 countries in 1 year.

664-06269879Heading west we would zig-zag by dipping down through Main, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, up through Quebec and Ontario, then Manitoba down through North Dakota, Montana, up through Alberta, British Columbia, back down to Washington, Oregon, California, park our camper and fly to Maui and back, then head over to Baja Peninsula, then ferry to Mexico’s mainland. We would hug the west coast, down through Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras to Nicaragua, Costa Rica to Panama. On our return trip we would detour to Belize, Yucatan Peninsula, explore the east coat of Mexico, and head up Texas. From there, it’s a toss up. Do we explore New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, then head back to the west coast up to Canada to visit everyone again? Or do we follow the southern US coast to the east? That’s the beauty of the open road.

“It’s not the destination that matters, but the journey.”

I am sure that wherever our journey takes us, adventure and inspiration will abound. The world is such a beautiful place. We just need to wake up our senses and drink it all in.

  1. Oh Daina, I’m so excited for you guys! I just spent my break at work googling a few of the places you’ll be visiting, drooling over pictures. I’ll be living vicariously through you for the next while ;-)

  3. When shall we expect you in Oregon?? Can’t wait to see you guys!

    • Rina, it will be so much fun to see you guys on your home turf! We’ll be rolling in sometime next summer, most likely mid-late July.

  4. Wow ~ you guys are going to have so much fun! Thanks for sharing your journey. If you haven’t visited Utah before I’d highly recommend it. Especially the southwestern corner (Zion & Bryce Canyon). And if you find yourselves with some spare time while traveling down California’s central coast & want to meet for a cup of coffee or lunch & local beach recommendations, drop me a line. I’d love to meet you!

    • Hey Pat! I would absolutely love to finally meet you; coffee and lunch sound perfect. When I was a kid my family travelled all through the states and one of my favourites was Utah! I remember the scenery, the most incredible colours and sunsets. I’m not sure exactly where we’ll be travelling, but I hope we do make it there. I want my husband to see it. One idea we have is to head up the east coast of Mexico, into Texas, New Mexico, and zigzag through Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Utah, and then head north through California back along the coast. But that would be a long time away from the ocean ;) See you next summer! Daina
