Week 3 // Wakefield to Toronto

A couple days before we left home in Nova Scotia, my sister Cheryl sent me a text. I could almost hear her excitement through the words on the screen, “We’re going to have the best birthdays ever! I took your birthday off (May 23) and mine off (May 30)”. And so it was… For Cheryl’s birthday we biked into town, had the best poutine lunch at Claire’s favourite spot, and then settled in for a decadent coffee (hot chocolate for Claire). There wasn’t really a plan.

We just peddled here and there, wherever seemed interesting. Eventually we biked toward the Old Mill and came across a trail that Cheryl hadn’t yet explored since moving to Wakefield a few years back. We tucked the bikes behind some trees in the wooded entrance and set about exploring.

Gatineau Park

The Gatineau Trail led us to the most unique art installation I had ever seen… Original paintings by Derek Wilson, hung on trees in the woods. The colours and organic composition of the collection fit in so beautifully with the rustic setting.

The Village of Wakefield  recently built a new skate park! There were a few kids having fun, practicing tricks.

Later that day my cousin Paula and her other half, Etienne, and their daughter Mila all came over from Montreal to spend the night with us. Paula gave us each birthday presents of Bubbles, and made a delicious birthday breakfast!

My last night in Wakefield ended as wonderfully as it began… with a campfire, a glass of wine, and my sister’s company.

The next day- onward to Toronto to visit Stefan’s brother, my sister-in-law, and our 3 nieces.

We took a side trip south to visit Stefan’s cousin. We were so close to Lake Erie, so we went out for a paddle to test out my new 9’2 Riviera Nugg SUP. It handled the rough chop beautifully! I can tell it will turn on a dime in the surf. I already miss the ocean. In a few weeks we’ll be paddling out on the Pacific Ocean off Vancouver Island.

Every year my in-laws neighbourhood gets together for a big street party. Our timing was perfect this year. It was loads of fun for all!

There was a Kid’s 3-legged Race and an Adults. My oldest niece Ellie won the kids race…
